A Means to a Greater End...
intentional - urban - intersection
Lightboards is a small scale skateboard deck manufacturing company in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia. It was founded in 2014 by a man with an entrepreneurial spirit, an enjoyment of skateboarding, and a desire to shine light in his community. The company was catalyzed by some winnings from the annual Georgia Tech Ideas to Serve competition.
Thanks to a partnership with Eutree (a local sawmill), Lightboards skateboard decks are made out of wood from forest-free Atlanta trees. This means the trees were not removed for the purpose of making a product. They were the trees that "got in the way". The ones that weren't "worth" the work of restoring. They were considered "unwelcome" in their own community. Funny thing is, they already had deep roots where they grew. They provided shade for the weary. They extended branches to all sorts of birds, even those coming from far away. So instead of casting them aside and watching them decay, Lightboards contributes to their new life as functional and artistic creations. Each skateboard is a one-of-a-kind reminder to its rider to take a look around and do the same in their place in the woods.
Lightboards functions out of a small woodworking shop in the heart of the city at Studioplex. The operation of the company is structured to create natural intersections in the lives of individuals with diverse backgrounds for the purpose of building and redeeming relationships. The Lightboards craftsmen hope to meet you soon and look forward to hearing your story and the way you are positively impacting your community!
unique - handmade - local
Each Lightboards skateboard is unique. It is memorable. It was made with intentionality, craftsmanship, attention to detail, and skill. Lightboards makes several different types of skateboards which are listed below. Unless explicitly stated, every skateboard deck was made out of wood from forest-free trees that grew up in or immediately around Atlanta, GA...the home of their makers.
The Lightboards craftsmen purchase solid oak planks and process them from start to finish. The skateboard decks themselves are either solid oak or multi-ply. Multi-ply decks are made out of 4 to 5 layers of oak, sometimes with one layer of cherry or some Atlanta Beltline wood. They are concave across the riding surface for added board strength and control. The paint and finish on each deck is used to accentuate the beauty of the natural wood grain and often to emphasize the surrounding city and culture. Skyline paint designs include the views from Jackson Street Bridge and Piedmont Park...both great places to visit as you cruise.
Additional components that make up the complete skateboard (trucks, wheels, bearings, hardware, and risers) are chosen specifically for enhanced performance, look, and feel. They are quality parts from well-established manufacturers. All skateboards are available for purchase as completes so each customer will be able to enjoy and share the full Lightboards riding experience as soon as they recieve their order. Your purchase aids in the sustainable part-time employment of a young man living in the city. The best way to support us is to buy a board.
Any sawdust collected during the transformation of the wooden lumber to the final product is taken directly to the compost pile at the Wheat Street Garden hosted by Truly Living Well where it is used as fertilizer to fuel the next generation of vegetation, urban gardeners...and maybe even skateboards.
